DESOTO COUNTY, MS (WMC) - Kroger in Mississippi now offers an opioid reversal drug without a prescription.

Kroger partnered with Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics and DeSoto County Sheriff's Department to make the drug available to everyone.

Naloxone, which is the generic brand of the well-known Narcan, will now be available at all 29 Kroger pharmacies in Mississippi after a consultation with a store pharmacist.

"As well as we go over the risk factors for people who may be at risk for opioid overdose or heroin overdose, as well as what signs and symptoms to look for if someone were to have an overdose and what to do and how to administer naloxone," said pharmacist Lindsey Cardosi.

The cost will vary like any other drug with factors such as insurance.

Leaders say their hope is seeing active advances like this set an example for the rest of the country.

"Governor Bryant has made this a priority for his administration is working with a number of other partners because we want to lead the nation against this epidemic," said John Dowdy with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.

"To make this product available to family and friends of people who suffer from opioid addiction, it's going to save lives," said DeSoto County Sheriff Chief Deputy Macon Moore. "I'm telling you it works."
