Five things to do Labor Day weekend in East Tennessee

Labor Day weekend is quickly approaching, and Knoxville will have a handful of local events featuring football, music and tomatoes.

Here's a few suggestions to liven up Labor Day weekend.

Tennessee football plus food, drinks

Probably the most anticipated event on Labor Day itself is Tennessee football's opener against Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Kickoff will begin at 8 p.m. TV, radio and streaming info can be found here.

If you're not planning to watch the game at home, here are some Knoxville-area locations offering watch parties and food and drink deals for the game, according to their Facebook event pages.

Tomato Crush

Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee is looking for volunteers to participate in its third annual Tomato Crush event.

Volunteers are needed to core and prep tomatoes from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at the Knoxville Convention Center, 701 Henley St. Children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Call 865-216-9083 to volunteer.

Cover Jam for Autism

The second annual Old City Cover Jam for Autism will kick off at 6 p.m. Sunday at Hanna's Old City, 102 S. Central St. The event will feature Vinyl Tap playing 80s hits, Teen Spirit with 90s hits, the Coveralls and local solo artists performing classic rock on the patio. 

Attendees must be 18 and older. Admission is $15 at the door. All proceeds will benefit  Autism Site Knoxville.

Mighty Musical Monday

The Tennessee Theatre will host Mighty Musical Monday featuring Mighty Wurlitzer organ performances by Dr. Bill Snyder and Freddie Brabson and special guest, Dor L’ Dor, a Knoxville klezmer band.

The free event begins at noon Monday at the theatre, 604 S. Gay St. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Brown bag lunches will be available for $5 while supplies last.

See a Smokies game

The Tennessee Smokies will face off against the Jackson Generals at home throughout the weekend. The series begins on Friday and will go through Monday. Game times are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 5:30 p.m. Sunday and noon Monday.
