Saying that the illegal trafficking of wildlife is not acceptable in Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada announced Monday that a Quebec firm had been fined $22,500 for dealing in polar bear skins.

In a statement, that federal ministry said Fourrures Mont-Royal Inc. pleaded guilty on Oct. 3 to three counts under federal regulations aimed at protecting wild animals and plants in connection with the illegal exportation of three polar-bear-skin rugs.

The $22,500 the firm was ordered to pay will go to the Environmental Damages Fund. Also, two polar bear skin rugs were ordered forfeited to the government.

As a result of the conviction, the company’s name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry.
