A serious crash and vehicle fire shutdown a Kansas City highway for hours Monday afternoon.
Eastbound I-670 was closed about 12:30 p.m. just before I-35 due to the wreck. Just before 4 p.m., traffic in both directions was getting the scene as crews continued to clean up.
Police say the crash was caused by one semitruck crashing into the back of another and causing a chain reaction. One truck appears to have been carrying candy which spilled out of the truck, burnt wrappers and product were left scattered across the highway.
Three people were taken to an area hospital with injuries from the crash. However, authorities say they do expect everyone to survive the incident.
A video sent to KMBC by LeAnn Baker shows the crash close up as the flames are still burning. The flames took nearly 30 minutes for fire crews to extinguish and it took several hours to clear the crashed trucks from the highway.
One KC resident with a home near the highway says the fire was so big it left massive pieces of ash in her yard.
The crash remains under investigation.
