VR TRAVEL CLUB | 10-11:15 a.m. through May 29. Sign up for Camarillo Health Care District’s new VR Travel Club and you’ll become a member of a core group that meets regularly for six weeks exploring the world together. Each week is something different, from adventures in Asia, Europe and popular U.S. destinations, to Cuba and North Africa, South America and other places around the globe. Each narrated 3-D video is 2 to 8 minutes and the group takes a couple minutes in between to chat about what we saw and experienced together as we are in the same place virtually at the same time, seeing the same amazing historic sites and natural landscapes. Each session ends with an awe-inspiring virtual excursion. The club meets 10-11:15 a.m. Thursdays, April 10-May 29 at 3639 Las Posas road in Camarillo. Cost is $30-$34 for the six-week series. CLASSICAL GREEK PHILOSOPHY FROM SOCRATES TO STOICISM | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. through May 1. DOROTHEA LANGE: “THAT SUCH THINGS COULD BE” | 10 a.m.-12 p.m.  Dorothea Lange produced an astonishing body of photographic work in a career that lasted from the 1920s, when she ran the most successful portrait studio in San Francisco, to her death in 1965. Best known for her Depression-era documentary work — including the world-renowned “Migrant Mother” — Lange brought the humanity of the poor into sharp focus.. Taught by Avril Angevine. STUART DYNASTY: SHAKESPEARE’S COMMON FOLK | 1-3 p.m. through May 8. William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, a period known as Early Modern England, a time of transition from the medieval to the modern. It is generally considered to span the dynasties of the Tudors and the Stuarts. Shakespeare lived in the middle of that span, and as a keen observer, gave us riveting portraits of the people and events of his era. We will use his life and his plays to tell us what life was like for commoners like himself. Taught by Charlene O’Rourke. QIGONG AND TAI CHI | 9:45 a.m.-12 p.m. through May 9. Tai Chi and Qigong are two forms of exercise recommended by the Harvard Medical School. In this introductory course, we’ll use gentle, flowing movements to develop balance, flexibility and strength while learning techniques to release stress and cultivate more energy. DATATHON | 9 a.m.-4 p.m. High school or community college students who would like to learn more about data collection and analysis are invited to a free “Datathon” at California State University, Channel Islands (CSUCI). CSUCI’s first-ever Datathon event is a day designed to help high school and community college students discover the fun side of data analysis. One of the Datathon’s organizers, CSUCI Associate Professor of Mathematics Alona Kryshchenko, stressed that students don’t have to have experience with data or be mathematicians to learn the basics of data analysis. LIVING HISTORY PRESENTATION: SHOT DOWN | 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The Commemorative Air Force Southern California Wing at Camarillo Airport will host a talk by author and speaker Steve Snyder in the main museum hangar. Steve Snyder’s father, Howard Snyder, was a B-17 pilot stationed in England during World War II. On February 8, 1944, his plane was shot down over the French-Belgian border after a mission to bomb Frankfurt, Germany. Steve will reveal the true story of the events surrounding that harrowing day. Of the B-17’s ten-man crew, some were lost, others captured, and a few managed to evade capture. Weather, operations, and maintenance permitting, CAF SoCal will conclude the event with a flight of one of their SNJ Texan trainers. Other iconic, flyable aircraft, including the venerable Supermarine Spitfire, the agile Mitsubishi A6M Zero, and its rival, the F6F Hellcat, will be displayed. Adventurous attendees can even book rides in select vintage military aircraft, and light snacks will be available for those needing a quick bite. CHUMASH STORIES AND PAINTING WITH PIGMENTS | 3-5 p.m. Join Chumash and Tataviam elder Alan Salazar and artist and author Mona Lewis for a unique and immersive experience that brings traditional Chumash stories to life through art. Alan will begin by sharing traditional Chumash stories passed down through generations—tales of animals, nature, and sacred lessons rooted in the Central Coast landscape. After listening to these stories, participants will be invited to grind local ochre stones into natural earth pigments and use them to create an illustration inspired by the story that spoke to them most. CALIFORNIA’S COASTAL IMAGINARY: MANAGEMENT OF OUR COAST IN THREE ACTS | 1-3 p.m. through April 28. The Coastal Imaginary is a powerful cultural construct idealizing California’s coastline, particularly that of Southern California. Sign up for Camarillo Health Care District’s new VR Travel Club and you’ll become a member of a core group that meets regularly for six weeks exploring the world together. STUART DYNASTY: SHAKESPEARE’S COMMON FOLK | 1-3 p.m. through May 8. William Shakespeare lived from 1564 to 1616, a period known as Early Modern England, a time of transition from the medieval to the modern. It is generally considered to span the dynasties of the Tudors and the Stuarts. Shakespeare lived in the middle of that span, and as a keen observer, gave us riveting portraits of the people and events of his era. COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM TRAINING | Through May 7. Recognizing the critical need for community members to be prepared and confident in taking appropriate action, the City of Ventura, in collaboration with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the City of Santa Paula, is excited to announce the return of its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program in May 2025. This free, hands-on program empowers 40 local residents with critical disaster response skills, preparing them to take action when it matters most. Applications are open to Ventura and Santa Paula residents and will be accepted through Wednesday, May 7. Classes being May 21. Spanish-language CERT course will also be offered in fall 2025 to expand accessibility and ensure more residents have the opportunity to gain emergency response skills. CONSTRUCTION AND TRADES TRAINING PROGRAM | Through March 31.  Enrollment is now open for the Workforce Development Board of Ventura County’s Construction and Trades training program, designed to help residents of the Tri-Counties become competitive applicants as they take the next steps in their careers in the construction industry. LIFE STORY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM | Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice is bringing back their beloved Life Story program. This program is designed to provide both community members and hospice patients the opportunity to record their personal memoirs. Helping one share their personal story, which might be lost if not passed along to the next generation, is a valuable gift that our Life Story volunteer provides. SPECIAL EVENT GRANT PROGRAM | Through May 1, May 5. The city of Ventura is now accepting applications for its Special Event Grant Program (SEGP), designed to support community events for local residents. To be eligible, applicants must be nonprofit organizations based in the city of Ventura with 501(c)(3) status. If a nonprofit organization based in Ventura does not have 501(c)(3) status, it must partner with a city of Ventura-based fiscal agent that holds 501(c)(3) status. Additionally, events funded through this program must be held on city-owned property, not private property. The SEGP allocates $10,000 annually to support community celebrations by offsetting the city’s required special event permitting fees. Grants will be awarded up to $2,000 per applicant. Thursday, May 1, 1 p.m.: Deadline to request a secure link to the grant portal. Monday, May 5, 5 p.m.: Deadline to submit completed application. DEMENTIA GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP | Every other Thursday, 1-2:30 p.m. Grief following death is anticipated and accepted, and closure is possible eventually as we deal with our loss. However, there is another form of grief, that we call “anticipatory grief”, when our loved one is still with us, but slowly declining before our eyes because of dementia. Families with loved ones who have dementia have unique situations, but all experience this kind of pre-death grief – grieving a person while they are still physically present. We call this Dementia Grief. Our support group provides a safe and confidential environment for those who are dealing with Dementia Grief and a place to share the “bad” days and the “good” days with others.
