LITERARY BRANCH INTERVIEW WITH ZAVIER CABARGA | 3 p.m. Most designers specialize in one thing: graphics, books, magazine covers, logos, fonts, furniture, interiors, etc. Ojai’s Zavier Cabarga designs all those things, and writes and designs books about them, too. His first book, begun when he was only 16, was a profusely illustrated history of the Max Fleischer animation studios. (The Fleischer brothers were major rivals to Walt Disney in the 1930s and ’40s.) His latest book is a wildly imaginative graphic novel that links together such compelling chunks of cultural history as the Yellow Kid, an early newspaper cartoon; the silent films of Weimar Germany; the Fleischers’ Betty Boop cartoons; Japanese anime; the TV show “I Dream of Jeannie;” and psychedelic ’60s comics. The book is called “Wild Girl: Wilhemina of the River Bottom,” and it was entirely created and largely photographed in Ojai. Intrigued? Join us on Sunday, May 11, at 3 p.m., when Literary Branch Chair Mark Lewis sits down with Cabarga to discuss his lifelong outpouring of creative projects, from underground comics in the ‘70s, to the 30-plus books he’s written or edited or illustrated, to the tiny house he designed and built for himself to live in. Admission: A suggested $5 donation. 113 S.Montgomery Street, Ojai, www.ojaiartcenter.org/literary.html.

THE OTHER UK: THE GLASGOW BOYS AND GIRLS | 10 a.m.-12 p.m. via Zoom. Today, when we think of the United Kingdom, we presume England and gloss over Scotland, especially when considering art. Glasgow, Scotland was a growing industrial city in the 1880’s and through that growth produced a group of artists whose rebellious natures catapulted the art world into Modernism. Many of the artist’s names are unfamiliar but the styles and design elements that were created by their innovations will be recognizable. Curious about who married the Macdonald sisters and were known as “The Four”? Who participated and created suffragette banners? Discover the Glasgow Boys and Girls who pushed through and ahead of the existing, stale academy mindset and became the catalysts for a barrage of contemporary artistic movements in the 20th century, whose sphere of influence remains with us today. Taught by Christine Maasdam. Offered through California Lutheran University’s Fifty and Better series. $35; bundles $70-145.
