For families, the health and well-being of their children is a top priority. For many Republicans in Congress, the well-being of children is not a priority at all; it actually is of little consequence to them. They have thrown aside 20 years of bipartisan support for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). They ignored the deadline to renew CHIP’s funding, jeopardizing well-being of nearly 9 million children who depend upon CHIP; 674,417 in Maryland alone. Why? In favor of a last-ditch effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Do the Republicans care that more than 95 percent of children have coverage today thanks to Medicaid and CHIP; that there are more insured children now than ever before in our country’s history; that access to health care for these children has meant higher rates of school success, college attendance, and financial stability later in life. No. Do they care that CHIP provides comprehensive, affordable coverage for children in low- and modest-income families, families who otherwise would not be able to afford coverage or specific services that kids need. No. Do they care that, in tandem with Medicaid, CHIP provides needed health care coverage for half of all children with special needs, and half of all children in rural communities and two-thirds of all children of color. No. The Republicans in Congress will leave all of these children and their parents with few options. Like 10-year-old Michael and his mother.
