Crestview to sell bonds for building project

NEW WATERFORD — Crestview is another step closer to its new buildings after the school board voted Wednesday to issue bonds not to exceed $1 million in anticipation of starting the construction project.

The bonds can be sold now that voters passed the 2.84 mill levy on May 5 to fund the local share of $5.2 million of the $43 million project. The money from the bonds will be repaid with money as it begins to be collected for the levy.

Superintendent Matthew Manley said the money from the bonds can be used to begin the process of designing the buildings, clearing and improving the sites where the buildings will sit and then furnishing it and equipping the new facility. It can be used for designs and to even pour the pad where buildings will be eventually constructed.

After the meeting, Manley said they can now begin to call meetings in order to begin to seriously make plans for the new facilities.

The new bonds will be issued for at least five years with the overall maximum maturity of 35 years, which is how long the levy remains. The maximum maturity of each note is 240 months (20 years) from the date of issuance.

In another construction matter, the board discussed the pending soccer field project where electric poles have been added. Board member Dave McGoogan said about 20 students recently helped by rolling the heavy wooden poles across the field so they could be put into placed. Another family helped by putting in the 400 feet of conduit to hold the electric lines underground to the poles.

The lift is coming today and the lights may be installed this upcoming weekend if the weather is good, according to McGoogan.

Manley noted the project has had a lot of assistance from McGoogan and many volunteering residents of the district, adding the money they are saving the district cannot be overlooked.

Additionally, it was noted money was approved to construct a new concession stand for the soccer field, replacing the current one, which was in bad condition.

In other matters:

— The board approved hiring sheriff’s deputies Steve Boyd, Willie Coleman, Damin Beadnell, Brian Deack and Luke Skidmore to provide security at a rate of $30 an hour.

— The board approved swimming as a club sport again for this upcoming school year.

— The board approved a three-year electric supply agreement with Freeport Energy, starting on January 1, 2020. Treasurer Charlene Mercure noted this was a lower rate than in prior years.
